Why Raising Readers?
Raising Readers is our urgent and long-term campaign to raise awareness about the alarming decline in children reading for fun. This campaign is a call-to-action to highlight the importance of reading for pleasure with kids and to encourage adults to make reading part of our children’s daily lives.
Reading for fun is the single biggest predictor of a children’s future success. Reading can help children build communication skills, improve academic performance, and broaden their worldviews. It’s also tied to their level of happiness and overall well-being.
Why It Matters

We’re experiencing a significant decline in children who read for enjoyment:
- As of 2022, only 39% of 9-year-olds and 14% of 13-year-olds are reading almost daily
- Younger children tally 5 hours of screen time per day on average—it goes up to 9 hours for teens
- In 2023, a survey showed that 31% of students never or hardly ever read for fun
We hope to break down the barriers to reading—especially in underserved and under-resourced areas—and make reading fun, inclusive, and engaging for children.
10 Minutes of Reading a Day. Golden.
We are committed to help children fall back in love with reading.
We’re forming partnerships with schools, libraries, community organizations, corporations, and influential individuals—in the U.S. and the U.K.—to turn 10 minutes of reading a day into a daily habit that will make the mind and heart golden.
