RESOURCES FOR 0 – 3 YEARS

  • Read Aloud. Reading aloud to babies and toddlers builds an emotional bond, creates a shared experience, encourages language development, strengthens concentration and focus, and models reading as a fun activity.
  • The Magic 10. Building just 10 minutes of reading aloud into your daily routine readies your baby for academic success and nurtures a love of learning.
  • Engagement. Hold your baby in your lap and read with expression! Use different voices, point to the art and talk about what you see, let your baby turn the pages, and ask questions.
  • Tap Along. While reading aloud, place your baby on their back and tap the bottoms of their feet in time with the words. This game develops listening skills and delights your baby with the sound of your voice and the rhythm of the words.
  • Reach, Reach, Reach. While reading aloud, move the book toward your baby’s hand and encourage them to touch objects on the page. Switch sides so that they reach with both hands! This game helps your baby work on fine motor skills alongside the benefits of reading together.
  • Storytime. Visit libraries and bookstores regularly for storytime events. Enjoying books in a group setting models reading as a fun activity, expands exposure to diverse stories and perspectives, and builds friendships and a sense of community.
  • Repeat! Babies and toddlers thrive on repetition, so reread favorite books again and again and check them out from the library again and again. Let your little one choose which books they want to read with you.
