“How long must our dear land be desolated by the ravages and our bravest sacrificed upon thy altars?”

What was it like to live through the turmoil of the Civil War as it exploded day by day? Robert Denney takes readers on an unforgettable journey through the years that disunited a nation. His chronological daily entries, abundantly illustrated with period images and maps, create an enthralling chronicle of the wars evolution. At the same time, the words of actual participants caught in the crossfire–drawn from diaries, letters, and books–provide a moving and personal perspective on the larger narrative.

About the Author

Robert E. Denney served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and was awarded many medals, including the Silver Star, the Army Commendation Medal, and two Purple Hearts. On retirement from the military, Denney pursued his lifelong interest in the Civil War, an avocation he attributed to the influence of a high school history teacher who, in the early 1940s, “peppered his American History classes with tales he remembered [from his youth] as told by the veterans, and stories of rural Indiana in the late 1800s.” Denney passed away in 2002 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
